Military Sexual Trauma has been described as a particularly devastating type of sexual trauma given the cohesiveness and loyalty of the military community; MST survivors often liken it to incest within the family. In fact, some studies indicate that the risk for developing PTSD following a MST is higher than the risk from being in heavy combat. According to a 2008 VA study, 21% of women and 1% of men reported sexual trauma during their time in the military. MST has gained increased media attention in recent years due to reports of insufficient prosecution of sexual assault perpetrators in the military.
